Bernard Buffet was born in 1928 in Paris and died in 1999 in Tourtour, in the south of France.  He followed the teaching of the Beaux-Arts of Paris from the age of fifteen years. In 1946, he exhibited his first painting, a self-portrait, at the Salon "des moins de vingt ans" (less than the age of twenty), and the following year he exhibited at the Salon des Independants. The State bought him a work for the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris. He is only twenty-nine years old.  He won the Critics' Prize several times and in 1955 he won first place in the referendum organized by the journal Connaissance des arts, designating the ten best painters of the post-war period. His rise is blazing. His success will never be denied. Elected to the Academy of Fine Arts on March 13, 1974, Bernard Buffet will be the youngest academician. Bernard Buffet, diminished by Parkinson's disease, commits suicide on October 4, 1999 in his studio in Tourtour in Var.
