FOREWORD
Our friend Codex Urbanus has created a book that was truly needed.
First, because it restores the proper meaning of words. The term street artist is now used far too loosely. It has become a convenient—sometimes marketing-driven and often inaccurate—label. Yet street art is defined neither by a style, nor by a technique, nor by an aesthetic.
It is defined by an act.
To be a street artist is to intervene freely in public space without permission, repeatedly and without charge. It is to embrace impermanence, risk, and the unexpected. It is to choose one's techniques and materials without limits other than imagination.
This book is also necessary because it reveals the extraordinary diversity of the movement. Unlike any other artistic movement, street art brings together artists who may have almost nothing in common except the shared desire to leave a mark or communicate a message in the public space.
With this Pocket Atlas of Street Art in Paris and Its Suburbs, Codex Urbanus has documented 200 artists active across the Paris region (Île-de-France). The result is a unique, meticulous, and authoritative reference that captures the richness of this remarkable artistic scene.
A project of this scale deserved an equally exceptional launch.
That is why we chose a venue as spectacular as it is unexpected: the crypt beneath La Madeleine Church. An underground space in the heart of Paris—visible to everyone, yet hidden beneath the footsteps of millions of passers-by.
As curator of this exhibition, I wanted to extend Codex Urbanus's work by offering visitors an immersive journey into the heart of the Paris street art scene. The artists gathered here embody the diversity and vitality of a movement in constant evolution.
The artists presented all share one thing in common: they are, or have recently been, active participants in the streets.
Because these artists are often discreet—and sometimes anonymous—we wanted to encourage direct encounters with the public. Nearly 100 book-signing sessions will take place during the ten-day event.
This is a rare opportunity to meet the artists who shape the visual landscape of our streets every day and to leave with a truly unique publication.
Finally, in keeping with the spirit of street art, the event will remain accessible to everyone.
Admission is free, with no reservation required.
From 24 September to 4 October 2026, the street goes underground.

THE BOOK
For decades, Paris has established itself as one of the world's capitals of street art, home to an exceptionally vibrant and constantly evolving urban art scene.
Yet despite the abundance of publications devoted to Parisian urban art, no guide had previously offered a practical way to identify and better understand the countless unauthorized, ever-changing, and ephemeral works whose locations are constantly shifting.
Designed like a naturalist's field guide, this pocket atlas enables enthusiasts and curious walkers alike to recognize and identify artworks and the street artists behind them.
Featuring more than 800 photographs of emblematic works, this second edition provides everything needed to identify 200 essential street artists, including their preferred locations, artistic concepts, techniques, and social media contacts.
The ideal companion for discovering street art throughout Paris and the Île-de-France region, this guide invites readers to embark on spontaneous urban art safaris while fully appreciating the artworks generously offered by their creators.
