Alberto Giacometti was born in Switzerland. His father, a post-impressionist painter, had a workshop built where Alberto produced his first creations, encouraged by his father.

He arrived in Paris in 1922. He stayed in Archipenko's studio and attended the workshop of Antoine Bourdelle with whom he worked until 1927 at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Montparnasse.

In 1926, 1927, 1928, he exhibited his first works at the Salon des Tuileries. In 1929, he worked with his brother for the decorator Jean-Michel Franck, finally, he decorated the shop of Elsa Schiaparelli for whom he created jewelry and signed a contract with Pierre Loeb, one of the most important merchants of the "avant-garde". It is his sculptures exhibited at the Jeanne Bucher gallery that mark the beginning of his notoriety. Alberto Giacometti approaches the surrealists and exhibits from 1930 with Joan Miro and Jean Arp. Worry, dreaminess, uncertainty, violence are the characteristics of the sculptures of this time. He made his first exhibition in the United States in 1934, in New York. He was excluded from the surrealist group in 1935, when he pursued a quest for the representation of reality. A first retrospective takes place at the Kunsthalle in Basel in 1950 and the same year, a first work enters a public collection. Then there will be retrospectives at the Arts Council England in London, at the Guggenheim museum in New York ... He will represent France at the Venice Biennale in 1956. In 1960, he created the most important work of his entire career “Walking man I”. There are countless other great art prizes he will receive from his date until his death in 1966.
