/// Biography of SAX ///

Henry Blache, known as Sax, is a French street artist based in Paris and originally from the south of France. His animal paintings, splashed with vibrant colors, quickly captured the attention of passersby in the streets of Paris while conveying an ecological message about endangered species. His highly instinctive and spontaneous painting technique draws on certain principles of Chinese xieyi painting, emphasizing the expression of emotions and feelings.

From watercolor and ink to acrylic paint and aerosol, he uses a wide range of materials to intensify the emotional impact of his works. In March 2023, his exhibition “The Four Elements”, organized by Galerie Roussard at the Church of La Madeleine in Paris, attracted nearly 15,000 visitors. During the summer of 2023, he launched a project of monumental ephemeral murals titled “Empreintes” (“Imprints”), creating two large-scale ground frescoes using 100% natural materials and drawing inspiration from certain techniques of prehistoric cave art. These works, painted directly in nature, only reveal their full form when viewed from the sky.

The spontaneity and precision of his work are also demonstrated through the live painting performances he regularly carries out at events in France and abroad.

/// Artwork Analysis ///

This portrait of Jean-Paul Belmondo immediately captures attention with its clear gaze emerging from a whirlwind of matter and color. Sax combines acrylic, ink and aerosol with a vivid and instinctive gesture, faithful to the raw energy of street art. Splashes and rapid marks give the face an almost cinematic presence, like an image caught in motion.

Created live during the Galerie Roussard festival at La Poste du Louvre in November 2025, the piece retains the spontaneity and intensity of the moment of its creation, performed in front of visitors. The palette of ochres, blacks and touches of red and blue reinforces the character and depth of the portrait.

More than a simple tribute, this canvas captures Belmondo’s raw and popular charisma through an energetic and contemporary pictorial language typical of Sax. A powerful piece, born in the moment, carrying both the memory of an icon and the energy of its public creation.
